We are accepting nominations for the 2009 NAWBO/Wells Fargo Trailblazer Award. Three outstanding women entrepreneurs will receive this award for their trailblazing spirit as demonstrated by their company performance, entrepreneurial vision, innovative spirit and service to their community. Each winner will receive a cash grant of $5,000 and nationwide recognition, and will be honored at the NAWBO Women's Business Conference in Chicago in June. Apply by March 24!

Tips to cut back on expenses
Eliminating waste and excess is critical to small businesses' efforts to cope with the economic slowdown. Some tips for cutting back include: use less paper, cancel subscriptions, compare mailing costs and tell vendors you have to cut back to give them the option of offering discounts rather than losing business. California law offers protection from frivolous lawsuits
Small-business owners in California hope that a new law will protect them from lawsuits concerning disabled access. The law provides small businesses "with protection against egregious lawsuits," says John Kabateck of the National Federation of Independent Business in California. San Diego Union-Tribune

IRS Launches Campaign to Help New Small Businesses
The Internal Revenue Service has launched a year-long campaign to help educate new self-employed small business owners about federal tax responsibilities and about filing Schedule C, Profit or Loss from Business. The first event in the campaign is a free national phone forum, "Calling All First Time Schedule C Filers", on May 21. It will focus on common pitfalls for new small businesses to avoid.
