3 Simple Steps to Venture Financing (#4 of 4-part series) by Cassie Hoag, Equity Architects, LLC
Step 3: Get Help If you’ve gone through the list in Step 2, and everything’s in hand and in order – GREAT! If not, get someone to help you with the missing pieces. This could be an investment banker, a financial advisor or a consultant, depending on what needs to be done. Just make sure that you engage someone who knows the venture fundraising process and is connected in the investment community. Now, it’s time to go to “the money”... continued

Negligent Hiring: What Every Owner Needs to Know About How to Properly Evaluate Employees by Chris Felicijan, Pinnacle Investigations
Due diligence should be considered a critical aspect of the hiring procedure, and savvy business owners are aware of this. In the United States 16% of the population has criminal records, and one of every six job applicants has a drug problem. Applications are falsified 40% of the time, and murder is the third leading cause of death on the job. Employers lose 72% of negligent hiring lawsuits... continued

When it comes to personal savings, we’re not doing such a good job. As more and more people build up higher balances on their credit cards and take out loans to finance things they really can’t afford, the level of savings in our country has dropped to record lows. But despite all the negative news you’ve probably heard lately, there is a glimmer of hope in the facts and figures behind a new wealth-building performance measure from A.G. Edwards... continued

BOARD & COMMITTEE NEWS
Membership: Please volunteer to join our chapter’s new Member Outreach Committee, which is the combination of our former Recruitment, Retention and Hospitality Committees. This distinguished group sponsors and nurtures our members to assure that questions are answered and needs are met. Your participation in the Member Outreach Committee can involve making and answering phone calls and e-mail messages, greeting monthly meeting attendees and reporting member feedback to our Executive Committee. You can spend as much (or as little) time as your busy schedule permits. There will be a brief orientation for the new Member Outreach Committee immediately prior to our August 1st dinner meeting at 4:30 pm in the foyer outside our meeting room. This session will be led by Cassie Hoag, VP Membership, and Moty Koppes, Membership Chair. We hope to see you there.

NAWBO-OC NEEDS YOU! There still are several openings for committee chairs for the 2006-07 fiscal year. If you want to get involved with NAWBO on a deeper level, please consider volunteering for one of these important positions. See board page for list.

This committee communicates and builds relationships with our existing and prospective Affiliated Organizations, and is very involved with those that participate in our Remarkable Women Luncheon. Contact Camille Jayne 714-328-1400 or click for more info about our affiliates.

AND, OF COURSE, WE ALSO NEED COMMITTEE MEMBERS! Committees are the ideal place to get your feet wet. Time requirements vary greatly and are generally very flexible. The "work" on our committees is fun, as well as productive; and the relationships developed are priceless. See volunteer page for specific needs.

Public Policy: NAWBO’s new Public Policy Forum was launched at the national convention in San Francisco last month. This forum seeks to leverage our credibility and expand our power and influence as women business owners. We can share the message that the nation's 10.6 million women business owners are a powerful united force with significant economic influence and impact. But we do need to be willing to step up to the plate as an advocate.

TAKE ACTION TODAY ... The SBA recently issued proposed regulations for a new program setting aside government contracts for women-owned businesses, the Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract Assistance Program. see RIN:3245-AE65 rule Our forum has been asked to develop a public comment about the proposed SBA rule. We are interested in hearing from you as we develop NAWBO's comment. Please send your comments, concerns and opinions to Shaila Mistry, NAWBO–OC's Public Policy Vice President.

Programs: We welcome opportunity drawing prizes for August's members-only dinner, as well as member exhibit tables. These are great ways to feature your business at a NAWBO meeting!

NAWBO OC Helps Defeat Job-Killer Bill Over the last 5 years, NAWBO members in Southern California have successfully bid on dozens of MWD contracts worth millions of dollars. That success story was in jeopardy of ending when Assemblyman Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) introduced AB 2397. If passed, this bill would have prevented MWD from contracting for professional services. Instead, MWD would have been required to hire employees, creating a civil servant operation very similar to Caltrans. NAWBO members did not stand idly by and wait for the inevitable... The OC Chapter and various members went on a letter writing campaign to the legislature to give them the facts about a civil servant operation, such as increasing operating costs and slowing down the time a project would be brought to completion. On June 19th Assemblyman Calderon pulled the bill from committee, stating among other things the groundswell of opposition from the small business community.Once again NAWBO-OC made a difference!

The Gas Company Does Business With Women Last year Sempra Energy, parent company to The Gas Company and SDG&E, spent a record $215 million with about 272 diverse-business enterprises (DBE) owned by women, minorities and service-disabled veterans.
