MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, CATHY DAUGHERTY
I am deeply honored to assume the position of President of NAWBO-OC for the 2005-06 year. I’ve met some of the most wonderful people in this organization; so the thought of leading our chapter is very exciting. As a NAWBO member I have made great friends, and I have grown… From my NAWBO friends and colleagues I have learned much about business, community, family, and “life” issues. In fact, I have learned so much that my business has more than tripled since I joined the organization! Our theme this year is “The Answers are Here!” Now you just have to ask the questions. KUDOS
Hilary Kaye, NAWBO Board Member and Corporate Partner, reports that her public relations firm, HKA, Inc., won 4 awards at the PR industry's competition on June 24. The two first place and two second place awards spanned the categories of media relations, brochure, "pitched" article to a magazine, and PR for PR (educating the public about PR). "Most rewarding was being the only agency in Orange County to win a first place award in Media Relations (publicity) -- always the most hotly contested category," Hilary noted. "We know we do great work but it's wonderful being honored by our peers."

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
Smita Salgaonkar, NAWBO board member and owner of Neemo's Ice Cream, received a glowing review in the LA Times food section on June 29. Smita's Saffron Silk ice cream was the first ice cream reviewed in the article "Scoop After Exotic Scoop"—and the writer apparently loved every spoonful. Smita's Neemo's Ice Cream is sold wholesale to specialty markets and restaurants and she is currently opening Saffron Spot in Artesia, an informal restaurant devoted to saffron-flavored treats. Congrats Smita!

Six NAWBO members were among the business owners quoted in the article "Declaration of Independents" in the July 4 OC Register Business Monday section. Jan Norman quizzed small business owners on how they felt about the independence of owning their own businesses, both pro and con. Included in the article were Nahid Casazza (Aspyrre Professional Coaching), Michelle Howe (Word Magic), Hilary Kaye (HKA, Inc.), Deidre Kelly (Kelly & Kelly Insurance), Liz Schmidt (Intelligraphics) and Judee Slack (SlackTax).
