Judy,

Great post. I hate being "sold to" and try not to do that with potential clients. I do strive to keep in touch with people and businesses I want to work with, however, by following their activities, commenting on their social networks, networking face-to-face when possible, inviting them to events they might benefit from and sending them information that could be useful to them. I try to build a relationship. Sometimes, this takes years. But it has proven to be successful for me. Last year, a company hired me after five years of relationship building. That company was my biggest revenue-generator. Because I approach these activities as building a relationship, I don't get disappointed at not "making a sale" immediately. Everyone fits into my business life with a purpose.

Hi Judy,

What a great question! As a client, I too do not like being pestered. However, I do like it when people keep in touch. I have found it easiest to increase the length of time between attempts to connect to someone if they are beginning to appear less interested. For example, I may begin checking in with someone every 3 months instead of every month. I am interested to hear what strategies other NAWBO members use. Thank you Judy for the thought provoking post.

I don't know if this is true, but I've heard it said that despite all the talk about multi-tasking, there really is no such thing. We just do one thing at a time and keep switching back and forth between tasks. It doesn't really make things go faster, either. Focus is the key to efficiency and productivity. Thanks, Loreen, for reminding us to be aware of what we are doing. Your advice is good during the holidays and all year round. ~Judy

Hi Loreen,

You raised an excellent point about training our brain to focus on one task at a time. Very useful advice for the holiday season!

Thanks,
